Is it a requirement to have a GFI installed in a laundry room with a laundry tub? If so, what year did this become code? If washing machine is within six feet of the laundry tub, should the washing machine be on a GFI?

Every thing in the laundry room is required to be on a gfci. except the washer.
I'm not sure of the years the code changed. It has nothing to do with being within 6 ft of the wash tub.
Gfci is required even if their is no sink in the room.

In 08 the washer may also be required to be on gfci I'll have to check that.

Could you please cite a section of the NEC that will back up what you have stated.

I just cannot find it myself...at least not in my book.

I disagree with this. Receptacles in a laundry room only need to be GFCI protected is there is a sink in the laundry room , and then only the receptacles that are within 6 feet of the outside edge of the sink wether it servers the washer or not. 210.8(A)(7)

Okay, you are right for 08 perhaps 05.
But I thought for sure that gfci was required in the laundry room at one time even with out the sink.
Perhaps I am wrong , again.

GFCI protection is required in laundry areas, within 6 feet of the laundry sink (if there is one). This did not change from 2005 to 2008. Between 2002 and 2005, laundry sinks were added (it used to only say "wet bar sinks).

I am totally confused - laundry room?

I am totally confused. Are GFI's required in laundry rooms or not? Can anyone cite the reference in the code explaining whether or or not receptacles in a laundry room should be on GFI and if the receptacle the washer is plugged in to should be on GFI?

For an even easier reference, check your IRC code book. I just grabbed the 2003 book and section E3802 tells you where GFI's are required. Just looked at 2006 and it shows the revisions that popped into the 2005 NEC requiring GFI's within 6 feet of a laundry tub. So in other words, no laundry sink, no GFI required....under the 2005 NEC/2006 IRC.

Which code cycle are you referencing?
Take a peak at 210.8(A).

No requirement.
But if the laundry room is in a basement or garage those receptacles may be required to be GFCI protected.
The GFCI protection requirements for sinks and basements/garages are in two different sections.

No, unless of course the laundry room is in a bathroom, unfinished basement, garage, outbuilding, or outside...

Or if the receptacle is in any location within 6' of a sink.

Thanks!

Thanks!

Thank you for providing this information. I was able to find the section/requirement.
