GFI TRIPPING ISSUE

I had a service call were the homeowner tried to replace a old GFI outlet with a new one. After he tried to install it and could not make it work I was called to troubleshoot the problem. He used a new device and had transposed his connections to the device. After correcting the wiring, I installed a "in-use" w/p cover. Now the only thing the devise powers is a Low voltage Magnetic lighting transformer with built in time clock, for some landscape lighting. It is a 600w rated unit with about 300w load on the secondary side of it. The lighting is used ever night. About once or twice a week the GFI will trip out, there is no pattern to random tripping. My question is since the lighting has been in place for about 5 years now. Could a bad splice on the secondary circuit cause this issue. I since have replaced the GFI twice now to make sure i just didn't get a bad new device. I think it might be the back EMF spike when the transformer shuts down. I don't know if a torrid coil placed around the connecting power cord will help. Has anyone had this issue, help...

Nothing on the secondary side of the transformer can trip the GFCI.

The problem has to be in the 120 volt part of the circuit.

Is it possible dew is forming inside the in use cover?
