I had a discussion with an inspector this morning, let me know opinions. There is a pedestal service located on a farm, there will be an underground 8-2 UF line run from it to an area near a duck blind to hook up an ice eater. The ice eater is 240 volt single phase, is it required to be GFI protected?

IMO, no GFCI on 240v unless the duck blind falls under Art 682.

It's basically like one for a dock, a unit with a fan type propeller to circulate the water and keep from freezing. The electrical install does not need/have to be mounted on the blind. Owner called it an ice eater and gave me the specs, don't know if that's a brand name or not.

I would agree as not required.
However many a devices today that were previosuly exempt from GFCI protection now require it.
It could be considered as a non code upgrade.

Looks to me that 682 would apply here, as this is a pond that gets flooded for duck hunting. That also means an insulated EGC is required, he was planning on running 8-2 UF direct buried out to the location.

I just had another interesting question posed to me from one of our guys in the shop about UF. Could they use 3 wire UF and re-identify the white insulated cable per 250.119(B)? I've never seen that done, but would it be legal?

As long as there is no need for a neutral for control or other loads, I do not see why not. The breaker would have to be 2 pole with common trip, IMHO.
