I don't think the code requires GFI protected receptacles in mechanical rooms, unless of course it was within 6' from the edge of a sink (such a service sink or mop sink.) Then it would be required by 210.8(B)(5).

I think you mean 210.63, which requires a receptacle for servicing to be located within 25' of HVAC equipment.

That receptacle wouldn't need GFI protection per 210.8 unless it was located on a roof, in a kitchen or bathroom, outdoors, or within 6' from the outside edge of a sink.

If the mechanical room is in a basement of a dwelling unit 210.8(A)(5) may apply.

I don't see anything in 210.8(B) that would specifically require a receptacle installed in a general mechanical room to be required to have gfci protection.
