Can someone give me direction on what the code says about lighting located in a work pit in a garage area? The current application has all recepts below grade, GFIC and all conduits including lighting circuits with seal offs to prevent vapors from traveling. Thanks for any insight you may give on this.

You will need to determine the classification for this pit. See Article 511. This will refer you to article 501. You will need to determine if the pit is ventilated and if gaseous fuels are or are not transferred in the area. You will probably need to discuss it with the AHJ to determine how they interpret the classification of the area.
