I have someone asking me to install their track lighting for them in a location where there is no lighting or boxes. You can buy a cord to plug into the end of the standard tracks allowing you to plug the track into a receptacle. The light that she wants dosn't have a standard track (its one of those wavy tracks). The track hangs from an electical box. She has no electricity or electrical box. A few questions...can I just drill a hole or file a notch in the base of the fixture to wire in a cord?I would think I could if I used the proper bushings and/or clamps. If I did it this way, do I have to mount it on an electrical box? She rents and can't cut holes in her cieling, otherwise I would just snake romex and hardwire it. And back to the begining, I'm assuming if she just went with a standard track and cord, no box is needed and I could just screw the track to joists and use a cord that plugs into the track, correct? Any suggestions and applicable codes would be appreciated.

Re: giving hardwired light a cord

1. Did you ask your boss or journeyman? What did they say?
2. IMHO I would say "No can't be done." The mfr does not make the appropriate fitting for the wavy track, unlike the straight track. I would say the flex-track is not UL listed for this application.

Re: giving hardwired light a cord

Can you do it ?
yes
Is it a violation of the manufacturer's installation instructions & a code violation ?
