140 golf carts! 4 Panels! Is there anything in the code on diversity of loads for the chargers? Cord and plug connected units. I have read 695 and 510a. FLA each charger is 9A.

Re: golf cart charging..

JTB, what does article 695 (fire pumps) and 510 (hazardous locations) have to do with this?

You are not going to be able to take advantage of load diversity unless you are a registered PE, and can prove the math, and willing to stamp it.

I have designed a lot of DC battery plants, and the trick with batteries is they are treated like a continuous load. When a battery is discharged and connected to a rectifier, it will draw full amperage until the battery is fully charged, typically 8 to 48 hours depending on battery and rectifier size ratios.

Now I have not designed a golf cart garage before, but here is what I do know. The carts are used during the day, and put in the garage at night for recharge. Meaning they will all be connected at the same time drawing FLA for more than 3 hours. Looks to me like 140 dedicated 15-amp circuits with a load of 630 amps on a 240 VAC single-phase service. Just an educated guess.

Dereck: Would lighting contactors on time clocks or program timers work in reducing the load at one time?

How long to charge the batteries?

Re: golf cart charging..

typically the battries in golf cart useally take about 4 to 12 hours to recharge depend how much they use it and charger size too .. i work on one charger not too long ago for forklift charger it was a big beast it was wired for 480 v 3 ph input current was near 40 amps !! output is 48 volt dc 250 amps ( steady rate ) 350 at peak it will taper down until charger timer or voltage senser read it then shut it off useally 6 to 12 hours depend on battery itself

ps make sure have plenety ventation in that area due alot of fumes from battries

Re: golf cart charging..

Do you need a service to fit the carts, or can you make the carts fit the service?

Re: golf cart charging..

Chargers come with carts, 9A, 120V, 3 batteries for 18VDC. Panels are 208/120 3ph 4w. Sorry, was working on fire pump system concurrently.

Re: golf cart charging..

I assume the batteries are valve regulated rather than wet cells, so ventilation may not be a problem.

Beenie, battery charge rates should not exceed the 8 hour rate. any higher or less than 8 hours will cause batteries to gas and shorten the life. You could use timers or limit the number of receptacles to minimize the service load.

Re: golf cart charging..

The real issue appears to be how many carts need to be charged at one time. 140 carts is a lot of golfers.

I never played golf, due to my last name. I felt everyone would expect too much ;)

I would think the carts should have a timer on the charging system.

An excessively large service would not appear to be cost effective. The utility company would likely charge for the transformer and related equipment, due to the service not being for a building load. Although the bill would be huge if many carts need charging every night.

Re: golf cart charging..

they are planning to use all the 140 golf carts to be charing every nite or it will be "on demand" like something like 75 to 85 carts given all day or some have diffrent charging time like some charge in the moring some charge in eveing ?? or all do go thru the charging at the same time ?? that i will like to know about it

JTB: point taken about ventation thanks for the pointer ..

i know some golf course use few electric carts but not all at same time unless specal event which it can use all the avabile units then it will get pretty hard on charging equipments and load centerers
