Can someone recommend a GOOD RELIABLE crimper to crimp insulated butt splices or ring terminals?

I often have to splice stranded wire from 24 AWG on up.... It seems that none of the crimpers ever work... Deforming a circular splice into an oval shaped splice really doesn't do the job.about the only way I can get a reliable splice is to use the crimper with the little tooth that sticks out into the other side, but that ruins the insulation and I have to use shrink tubing... defeating the whole point of the insulated butt splice.

We just bought a greenlee that crimps the thing in two places at once... which I really don't like , and it really doesn't work very well at all.

We have a Wago vario-crimp to put ferrules on stranded wire and I'm telling you that thing crimps... that thing does the job... If I could only find a crimper that would work that well on insulated splices.

thanks

Disclaimer: Keep in mind its been 15 years since I've done any production work. Just my stuff now.

I like this style. The Eclipse 300-xx It does both crimps - the conductor and the insulation, two different radii. However, only goes to 22ga.

For the stuff I want to stay together, I am also buying mil-spec terminals. They have a metal sleeve that grabs the insulation. I suspect the mil-spec instead of the nylon/pvc type without the insulation retention metal sleeve makes the difference.

I don't have an Eclipse brand. Mine are Amp and Ideal. Maybe 20 years old. But I'm pretty sure they are the same type - ratcheting and different radii for the two crimps. Probably the same as the Greenlee you don't like.

I like this guy's comic book on crimps (terminal.pdf below).

I take it the Wago doesn't do insulated. I've never used one.

It seems to me that these crimpers ought to have more than two jaws. It just doesn't seem that they can do the trick with two

Check out the attached pics. I have done a lot of wiring in my 43 yrs in the trade and IMO this Panduit Crimper #CT-1550 made in Germany is one of the best tools on the market for insulated terminals. It has replaceable dies for different wire gauges. Have not checked and not sure if it is still available. It was not cheap>>> around $250:jawdrop:

I just googled it, they are still available......but not cheap!!

I have a Panduit CT-1551 and I love it. I couldn't use a stamped steel type tool now on an insulated crimp and feel secure about it. I do have an AMP tool for really small bare crimps, but anything red, blue or yellow and I use the CT-1551. It differs from the 1550 in that the yellow die is nearest the pivot point, making it a little easier for that size crimp. I got mine on eBay. It's a good place to get used tools, but you might have to follow a few auctions before you find something at a reasonable price.
