I installed a Google doorbell on a house constructed in 2022 . The chime in the house is mechanical. When the puck that comes with the doorbell is installed on the chime it does not ring. Without the puck the chime rings fine. Google support says without the puck installed the doorbell may fail early. Anyone understand why the puck does not work?why without the puck the doorbell would be harmed?

The Google doorbell is in series with the chime. Depending on the characteristics of the chime, the current required to power the doorbell may be enough to cause the chime to make noise. The puck is simply a parallel path around the chime to prevent excitation of the chime. I’ve not had my hands on a Google device, but others (Ring, for example) state that if the system works without the shunt, don’t use it.

why without the puck the doorbell would be harmed
When most/any of these camera doorbells is used without a chime, and straight from a transformer, the device will be overpowered and will damage it. I know when you install one and don't have a doorbell/chime, then you have to install a resistor to limit the current, These will work without a transformer or chime as they have a battery. Hardwiring them just keeps the battery charged.
