I just imported 134 marked locations from my Garmin nuvi 350 to Google Earth. I needed to find the distance between 4 of the points to estimate a wire length. 1423 feet. My spool length is 1500. Close enough that I will have to plan the route carefully. Plus back it up with measured distances.

I had done this with other mapping software when laying out 3 acres for my new home site. The difference between the surveyed measurements and those from the GPS were 1'. Close enough for most purposes.

Technology
It is moving so fast in front of us, that it is difficult to keep up with. Sometimes I wonder where we will be in a few years???:cool:

It does confirm to me that our industry will become a niche market situation for most contractors. Only the larger contractors will be able to keep up with the pace of technology...JMHO

I have found that as a smaller contractor outsourcing is more cost effective rather than do things in house. As technology developes people will be filling these niches and we will just purchase their services directly.

Why do you say that? Just curious

Technology is moving in different directions, some of directions, it is moving very fast and hard to keep up with.
Photo Voltaics and other sources are one of the examples I am speaking of.

Data & Communications
Fire Alarm
Security
Audio/Visual

Just some areas of our industry that have already become specific businesses for some and there are larger shops that are doing all or some of those other than electrical work.
