Has anyone installed or seen a Gooseneck Service Head?

Though it is code compliant [250.54(B)] it seems like an eye sore. Perhaps it is common in other parts of the country.

Actually I have seen them in the southern part of New Jersey near the ocean. They were installed quite some time ago before the advent of plastic weatherheads.
