Grandfathered wiring

Talking about grand fathered wiring--
does the NEC cover wiring in an old building for
220volt two wire w/ground -- when new equipment has 220volt three wire with ground???
What NEC rule would you give a client to have them comply???

Yes, this is a coffee machine that gives high volume and is a plug in machine...
