It was never gray, it was natural gray for code years 1999 and earlier. The 2002 NEC removed the words natural. Identification of the grounded conductor is so important that the NEC devotes and entire article - 200 to it. A gounded conductor is identified by white or gray insulation, but reidentification can only be with white, a little mistake that the CMP made which will be corrected in the 2005 NEC. Just don't ask what a neutral is.
