Great correction letter

Hey guys,

I just got done reading a correction for a power and lighting project I drafted for our EC. I thought one of the items might be worth mentioning here.

4) NFPA 70 Indicate branch circuit wiring and demonstrate compliance with NFPA 70.

That's it. The whole item. The only problem is, the branch circuits are shown.

It's from the AHJ, or one of his minions. ;) It's a plans examiner, so not technically the AHJ.

It does seem like something someone who doesn't really know what's going on would put. I've run into plans examiners that didn't know what was going on, so they admitted it, and pulled the inspectors in to examine those portions.

That kind of comment is something that would be written by a plans examiner who has a checklist with an item that says:

"4) Verify branch circuit wiring compliance with NFPA 70."

The examiner is looking for a written response to put in the file to cover himself with respect to that item. It's a lot less work for him to give that boiler-plate demand that you document verification of compliance than it is for him to really do his job.

Looks like a checklist item to me as well.

There really isn't anything wrong with working from checklists in general. It provides consistency and avoids missing the obvious. However, the plans examiner needs to put the check list down after the intial review and actually look at the plans from the view point of an installer and inspector.

Add a note to the drawing that says EC shall perform branch circuit wiring in accordance with requirements of NEC, and resubmit.
Doesn't that sort of defeat the purpose of the plan, and the plan examining?

I've always wanted a note that said something to the effect of "You will do your darn job", just never had the cojones. I wouldn't mean it toward one person or group in particular, but every body.

Photocopy Article 210 and put it on the plans
I have never gone quite that far, but I once got a similar kind of response to some drawings I sent out asking me to verify the equipment was IAW the NEC. I sent them back a response that was something like "what chapters do you think apply"? Never got a response back. I guess they figured out that the innards of equipment doesn't really have much to do with the electrical code.
