Installed some 5/8" rope lighting in some kitchen cabinets for friends of mine about 5 years ago, to show off some of its plate ware. Well the other nite I was over having a drink and looked at the rope lighting, ther was some kind of green jelly build up dripping from the connector, where it plugs into the to the lights. where the two conductors run though the rope light, you can see the green jelly all along the wire path.At first I thought it was mellon ball drinks gotten all over the the cord set, when i went to the other cabinets and ALL the rope light had this crap all over the connectors. Longest rope light is only about 5-6', lights still work and my friend loves the lights, but it makes me a abit nervous seeing this green crap dripping from the connections............is it toxic?? or what? Told friend not to use the lights and not touch the geen stuff for now. (some was dripping on the counter @ one location) Should they be replaced OR clean up the connectors and call it good??? Very werid isnt it
Thanks Joe

Are these factory made ropes or some that were prefabed in the field? Ul has taken the listing away from rope lights that are field cut.

I don't know what the jelly is..... Toast some bread and let me know what it taste like. :D

The green stuff is plasticizer that's part of the pvc making process. It's not supposed to ooze out like that. The cable is defective.

They aren't finding dead flies and hearing faint noises that sound like "get out" coming from somewhere in the house are they?

Sorry, couldn't help myself.

It is very possible there is some kind of heat buildup in that location, and it is melting the plastic. I would do your friends a favor and have them disconnect the rope lighting, then find out from the manufacturer if there is a past situation they are aware of, and if it is correctible.

Yes, their is a heat build up, my friend likes to keep the lights on at nite for his kid (nite lite), I think this is why this is happening,as sometimes he doesnt turn them off for days/weeks at a time I have found out.
Will be looking into different type of light, maybe low voltage.

Thanks for your replys.....................Joe
