Hi guys just a quick question. Is it true that you can run greenfield as far as you want as long as it is strapped every 18 inches. This was the topic of conversation at lunch today.

There is a good sized chunk of the building stock in my Metro area that is wired 100% in flex. Most of these buildings, mostly dwellings, were built in the 50s through the 70s, under an "all metal code", under NEC that didn't require a separate equipment grounding conductor pulled in with the current carrying conductors. Lotta rambling ranch style homes with long flex runs, and they're all doing just fine.

Just keep the '360 degrees between pull points' requirement in mind. I see guys running flex of all sorts that forget about this. Also keep in mind that flex is functionally a bit more difficult to pull in, so plan by what means you're going to be pulling conductors and maybe jump up a size or use shorter runs if you feel the need.

Got that right.

Strap after the pull? Would that be considered an incomplete raceway?

And if you are talking about a really LONG run of flexible metal conduit, don't forget about voltage drop and its effects on the circuit. I have seen some really goofy installs in factory's that experienced that problem.

I always pre install the conductors in flex. You can make some sizable whips when necessary.

Just remember not to tie it in a knot when installing.;)
