Are the ideal Greenie wire nuts only for residential applications or can they be used in commercial and industrial as well? I was informed today that they are only for residential. I am a apprentiace learning the feild and wanting to gain more knowledge. Thanks for any info.

Wire nuts don't know if they're being installed in a commercial, residential, military, governement, intitutional, or industrial setting.

BTW, welcome to the forum!

Reminds me of a job where I used purple #10 stranded for all of the phase wires. (I had bought a 5000' roll of purple #10 for $50 from a supplier who couldn't get anyone to buy it because of the color.) The inspector commented on it. I told him that the electricity didn't know what color the wires were.

I like to stick to standard wire colors, but if I could get 5000' of #10 for $50, I would use it too! On one job I had, the electrical engineer specified using purple wire for travelers and pink or some other odd color for switch legs.... but as far as green wire nuts goes, he may be thinking of the little hole in the end of the wirenut being used with a bare wire for a pigtail.

I have some odd colors in my own house. Had a bunch of left over "high voltage" AC cable that I used to run out a few circuits. Some brown/yellow for 240 volt stuff and some orange/gray for 120 volt circuits. I can imagine that this will be fun if I ever sell the place and a home inspector comes in to take a look.

While you could use green wire nuts on commercial, why would you ?Actually it is more correct to say they are for romex jobs and some of them are commercial
Other methods, such as MC, or even conduit with pulled EGC's, can also use greenies.

Greenies are great except the EGC insulation won't slide thru hole. I just did not want the OP to think that one could not use a bare EGC in other than Residential......
