Your right, it is a building code.

Which means we can't really answer the question because there could be a hundred different answers. However, the info should be easy to find by asking your local building officials if they have a requirement.

Light fixtures weighing less than 10 pounds shall have one, No. 12 gage hanger wire.

Light fixtures weighing more than 10 pounds but less than 56 pounds shall have two No. 12 gage hanger wires.

Lighting fixtures weighing 56 pounds or more shall be supported directly from the structure above by approved hangers. Supplementary hangers are not required.

Pendant-hung fixtures shall be supported directly from the structure above using No. 9 gage wire or an approved alternated support without using the ceiling suspension system for direct support.

This is out of the CISCA standards for seismic zones 3 & 4.

This is the same standard that is used in my area.

When using grid wires for lay in fixtures, is it considered " independent " of

the grid and 410.16(C) 2005 does not apply ? I say this because the OP used

the word " independent" , IMO, these fixtures still need to be fastened to the

grid by bolts, screws, or rivits.

The requirements in the CISCA guide require both attachment to the grid system as well as the independant ceiling grid wires.
