I am installing a customer purchased solar pool pumping 'kit.'

It is stand alone, direct connect, no batteries. It consists of four 12 volt panels connected in series to drive a 48VDC pump. The 'kit' comes complete with a disconnect switch box with terminals to connect the provided motor controller.

Since this is only 48 volts, I do not need to 'solidly connect' one side of the DC source, so the system is considered 'ungrounded.'

Does anyone know for sure if I am required to install ground fault protection for this stand alone 48VDC system?

It seems both NEC 690.5 and 690.35 states that it is required.

I live in an area without electrical AHJ, so there is nobody locally to ask.

thanks,

joe

690.35 states that you have to meet all the requirements A-G including ground fault protection to have an ungrounded system.
