State of Nevada - apartment buildings built in 1987 - have gfi for bathrooms located on balcony of each apartment. Kitchen not included in gfi on patio, and has no other source of "gfi". My understanding is that those that passed building
inspection are "grandfathered" in and not required to make changes except during re-hab etc. True?

Re: ground fault receptacles

Lisa Your not the one that use to live in Crown Point, Indiana were you?. And was working at Barbery Coast down stairs across from the black jack tables?
It was about 10 years ago.
But as for you question.
it would depend on local laws and codes, as to what the local AHJ can inforce. here in Indiana the state does not require any thing existing to be brought up to code but any thing new has to be installed to the lattest code the state has adopted. but some of the local AHJ's think other wise. and makes us bring every thing up to the lattest code.
but if you think about it how can they as wouldn't the EPA make us bring our cars up to the lattest EPA standerd if they could? it would be like giving your car a tuneup and then having to install ploution control. Dont think so!

Re: ground fault receptacles

Having been in Las Vegas over 30 years, my experience with city and county AHJ has been that upgrades only have to be done during rehab. The Southern Nevada Amendments are available from any Building Dept. in Clark County or you can call to ask questions. Don't expect an answer from an inspector until late afternoon.
