When designing a Lightning Protection System for a building, when is a ground ring electrode required around the building? What code or standard is this defined in? Thanks in advance for your responses.

I am not a LP expert but I do not think that 780 ever "requires" a ground ring as long as all the down leads are terminated at an acceptable grounding electrode. It is a design decision.

The UFC requires counterpoise (ground ring) on many government projects.

Yes, I have looked in NFPA 780 and have not found anywhere where it "requires" a ground ring electrode or a counterpoise for a lightning protection system. Now from a design perspective when would it be good practice to provide a ground ring or counterpoise? For a building of a certain size? How big?
