I have heard some round about talk on how adding ground rods at generators is not ideal from a grounding perspective. Can someone shed some light as to why this is?

Mike Holt covered this in one of his video tutorials on why they're not required unless you have an SDS. It lengthy but has some good explanations:

It adds an additional way for lightning to get into to your electrical system, and does not create a single point ground.
Mfgs (read Siemens, Generac) require it for non SDS systems as thats the easy way out. Cummins understands the concept of single point ground and they get it right.
But if the generator instructions say install ground rods, then by 110.3(B) its required. Mike Holt and I went around and around on this with Generac some years ago and gave up.
