ground rod limitations for GEC

when sizing the GEC for a stand alone generator with OCPD of 800amps. 250.66 states that the GEC should be a 1/0 copper conductor. Can this be connected to ground rod?

A grounding electrode that consists of a single ground rod or 2 ground rods never needs to be larger than #6. Take a look at 250.66(A).

Also check out 250.56 if you are using only ground rods for the GES.

As Chris stated the ground rod only needs #6, however the GEC to the water pipes, building steel etc would need to be 1/0.

How are you guys coming up with a 1/0 GEC for 800 amps using 250.66? What size wire are you using for 800 amps?

The size of the GEC is determined by the ungrounded conductors, not the OC protection size. 3/0 copper run to a 20 amp beaker would require a 4 AWG copper
