Never got an answer from my post about this question. Detached garage 10' from house need GES established. Question: Can I use the houses GES instead of driving 2 new rods it is about 15' from garage. Code reference please. Thanks

In my opinion 250.50 requires that you have a grounding electrode system at the garage.

Re: ground rods revisited

Don, I agree. Since the code doesn't specify where or how far the GES is from the garage I thought that I could use the houses ground rods because they are convenient to the garage.

Re: ground rods revisited

Wouldn't it depend on the type of circuit going to the garage? If it were a branch circuit as described in 250.32 it wouldn't need a GES. Otherwise yes.

Re: ground rods revisited

It is a 40A sub panel with 3 circuits. Derrick you say I can use the houses ground rods? Any code reference for or against doing this?

I am with Don on this. It sounds like you are really reaching here. Seperate structure seperate grounding system. Derrick's scenario is not even close to what you are doing.

But same service

I don't understand as why the nec wouldn't require the bonding of the GE's as in the event of a lighting strike the lighting trying to get back to a better ground I.E. water pipes would have to travel back through the main panel to the GEC system. This is what the NEC try's to avoide in other section's of the code where it does require the bonding of the ground rods.

Heres a good example:

250.50 Grounding Electrode System.
If available on the premises at each building or structure served , each item in 250.52(A)(1) through (A)(6) shall be bonded together to form the grounding electrode system . Where none of these electrodes are available, one or more of the electrodes specified in 250.52(A)(4) through (A)(7) shall be installed and used.

Re: ground rods revisited

Wayne,
There will be bonding between the two grounding electrode systems, either by the second building grounded conductor or the EGC, based on how you make the installation. The only difference is that the conductor doing the bonding may not be as large as the #6 required in some code sections for grounding electrode bonding.
