Ground rods

If I have feeder going to another outside building B sized #2 AWG and it lands in bldg B 100A panelboard then assuming their is no grounding electrodes at bldg B so I install ground rods. Does the grounding electrode to ground rods still has to be #6 AWG or can it be #8 AWG?

It can be smaller than #6, but may require additional support and/or protection.
