The 1/2 inch rod you speak of is to be of stainless steel. I have never seen one installed, I am not sure what others have seen. 5/8 rods are much less expensive, and stock items on supply house shelves.

ERICO makes UL listed 1/2" X 8' copper clad ground rods.

I think others do as well. If I just ask our purchaser for a ground rod I will receive a listed 1/2" copper clad one

Our local supply house seems to carry the 1/2" listed ones as well. The listed 1/2" rods are required to have a thicker layer of copper cladding.

I believe the heavy layer of plating makes them 'equivalent'

Nope, the rod is required to be a minimum of 5/8" X 8' unless it's a listed rod, then it can be 1/2" X 8'.

Around here, the most common is ?" X 8" copperweld rods.

Unless it is a local amendment, the local AHJ cannot deny the permission given in the NEC.
