Is there an NEC requirement that a service ground needs to be run in the same conduit as the current carrying conductors or can it be run in a separate conduit?

Welcome to the forum.

With rare exception, service conductors do not include a grounding conductor; the neutral itself is used.

Let me clarify; Commercial application, I have 3- 200 amp, 3 phase panels fed from an MDC. When they were originally installed, there was no grounded conductor installed. At a later date someone came along and ran a separate conduit for the grounded conductor from the MDC to a Jbox near the panels and branched out to each panel. The business owner is concerned about this installation and wants to know if it needs to be updated.
I can not find in the NEC where it specifically states that a ground needs to be installed WITH the ungrounded conductors + grounded conductor.

@texie; that's what I thought. I'm curious what the code reference is, I'm not finding it specifically in 250...

300.3(B) got it! Thank you.
You are welcome. Sorry to sound a little harsh on correct terms, but the NEC correct terms are critical to avoid confusion.
I would also add that there is good reasoning for this requirement as this can cause inductive heating issues and it also raises the impedance of the circuit under short circuit conditions.
