Ground wire too thick

I am wiring a hot tub with a Balboa RS101 control box for 240v. I have 3 6AWG wires (2 hot and 1 neutral) and 1 8AWG ground wire. They are currently run into the hot tub's box. But the stranded ground wire seems to be too thick to fit through the box's pre-drilled hole for the ground wire. What should I do? Should I remove some strands from the ground wire to make it fit? Should I splice a thinner ground wire on to the end of the 8 awg wire?
