If you have (4) 20A 120V linear load branch circuits (120/240V single phase service)going into a junction box,do the grounded conductors need to terminate at the panel or could you run one conductor to the junction box that would be size at 40A?

Re: Grounded Conductor

I don't know of a code article that covers this, but gut feeling tells me you need at least 2 conductors rated 20A, assuming you are using 2 multi-wire circuits. Of course all the requirements of 210.4 for multi-wire circuits should be met. Maybe someone else can quote a NEC article that applies.

Re: Grounded Conductor

For a multiwire branch circuit each grounded condcutor must terminate in an individual terminal in the panel, per UL standard 67 and now the 2002 NEC. Ask your self what happens when the grounded conductor on a multiwire branch circuit is opened to the loads....
Also I don't see the savings on this, you have to go to the truck and get a roll of 8 AWG instead of using 12 AWG as a home run.
