The old Nec code regulation for 610.61 allowed the use of both bridge and trolley wheels as suitable means of grounding. The 2005 Nec code does not allow this. My question is, our building is 20 yeas old with 10 cranes running in 4 different bays. No of the bays had the 4th ground buss bar installed when the building was built. Now with the new code, do we have to add this ground bar to be in code because this is going to be very expensive and make alot of crane service companies rich.

While I have no first hand experience with the grounding methods you describe, I believe your installation is "grandfathered" as long as it was a compliant installation under whatever code cycle it was originally installed and inspected. :)

Re: grounding 610.61

That was what I was thinking but I have 1 crane service group saying there are no "grandfathering" in the code and another that says there is. We want to do the right thing which is to add the ground bar but we also need to know what kind of timeframe we have to work in as this is going to be a considerable cost to us. I may be looking at a total cost labor and all at around 100,000k dollars. Does anyone have a contact that could give me documented and reliable information that I could supply to my plant manager? Any help is greatly appreciated.
