Grounding above grade pools

I have been asked to ground an above grade pool yet 680.30 defines this as a storable pool with no specifics regarding grounding the actual pool structure. The structure itself is a typical vinyl clad aluminum frame and free standing alum. ladder. I have heard of this application but this is the first time I have had to handle this kind of installation. I am in NY and the local power auth. has no specs-they refered me back to the NEC Book.

Re: Grounding above grade pools

In NY, you are actually supposed to refer to the Residential Code of NYS. Chapter 41 Swimming Pools.

There are definitions of permanently installed or storable type pools. Just because a pool is above grade does not in itself define it as a storable pool.

Not only that, but you are not "grounding" the pool, but "bonding" it as per Section E4104. If in fact you are correct in the fact of "grounding", that is Section E4105 - which is something entirely different.

BTW - no matter where you live in NYS (except NYC), you will be required to follow this document for pool wiring installations.
Good Luck

Isn't it kind of cold for pool installations? ;)

If you are just getting started in residential, there is going to be changes to that code reference in 1 month. The new version will not be printed until May of 2006. I would not purchase one now, I would wait if I were you. If you need references or help, post here or PM me, and you will get help.

How are you and other ECs that you know in NYC dealing with the requirements of the NEC? I have been hearing that there is a lot of confusion on all sides at the moment.

If you do want to purchase one anyway;

Re: Grounding above grade pools

I appreciate the courtesy Pierre, will be in touch. As for NYC, things right now are status quo. For now anyway.

BTW: I did some exploring of this site after petersonras handy comment and now I get the vibe here. I like it! Just cause I'm new to the site doesn't make me new to the game.

Also I already bought the book.

This is half of the fun.
Most of us don't know what I am talking about any how. Shucks I don't know what I am talking about ALL the time.
I sometimes have to ask someone to explain to me what it is I am thinking about, like right now.
:D :D :D

New York City has it's own version of the NEC. Basically they follow the 2002 NEC with a list of amendments outlined in Local Law #81. If you need to look up an article you would look in the NEC and then see if your specific applicable section is listed in the NYC amendments. If not than you're good to go with just the NEC.

Here's a link if you would like to check out the amendments:

Re: Grounding above grade pools

The city of Seattle does essentially the same thing: ammend specific articles of the NEC and leave the rest as it is.

I understand that the State of California does too. I don't have a copy yet, but a possible project coming up sometime next year may require me to get one. Does anyone know if I am right about the nature of the CA Electrical Code?
