Grounding conductor taps

Does the NEC allow me tap my 2/0 grounding electrode conductor that is comming from the cold water pipe to the main service panel? What is the NEC section if they do allow this? What I want to do is tie my #6 ground rod wire to the 2/0 instead of running the #6 into the service panel. Thanks.

Re: Grounding conductor taps

If your useing the tap for the supplemental electrode then yes

250.53(D)(2) "The supplemental electrode shall be permitted to be bonded to the grounding electrode conductor , the grounded service-entrance conductor, the nonflexible grounded service raceway, or any grounded service enclosure."

So you are saying if I hit my uffer then I can split non continiously run the remainder of my grounding system IE: ground rods ??? A bond like a gas bond yes but a ground ???

Run one conductor to the water pipe, which requires the largest ground electrode conductor, then run to each of the other electrodes according to size of required conductor, in sequence of largest to smallest.

Re: Grounding conductor taps

If your aim is to follow the NEC our folks already answered your question. But if your aim is to have extra safety my point is this. As for extra grounding yes you may do so but you must run also conductor straight away to the grounding rod/plate.Grounding must be continous,in case of pipe we are not 100% sure the pipe has continous connection due to some insulation being used as seal although we may say there is water flow how about if water flow was interupted and the fault occur there will be a serios damage somewhere.

Just for safety reason make it straight away to the grounding bond.Don't think expenses and labor but think safety first that is why NEC is there.

sorry folks just for clarification about the term:GROUNDING ELECTRODE thus this mean the grounding rod/plate itseft or it mean the grounding conductor.

our definition of term might be different from yours, I am from Far East country.

Thanks.

Just for the sake of clarification of term only.

WyeDelta: The term "grounding electrode" refers to the rod/plate/pipe/rebar/steel itself. The term "grounding electrode conductor" is the wire going to the electrode itself.

In Wayne's post (hurk27) I am quite sure that he meant to say grounding electrode conductor.
