I've had instances where it would have to be several hundred feet and wondered about the effectiveness myself.

effective at what? for the most part it does not serve any purpose at all.

Effective at anything. If I set a small stepdown transformer 500-600 feet Fromm the building GES, run my GEC back to it, What did it do??

why would you need it anyway? the transformer pad is a structure that needs its own GES. There would need to be either an EGC or a supply side bonding jumper going back to the service depending on where the OCPD is, but not a GEC.
