I can't find the standard on this. But my recollection is that this can not be done and a permenant grounding rod must be installed or utilized. Any thoughts or specific code on this.

I don't understand. What electrical device would be attached to a drum filled with flammable liquids? Why is there a conduit connected to the drum?

But the real question is, what do you mean by "grounding"? If your drum needs to have a connection to planet Earth, then a conduit is not the right way to create one. At best, a conduit might comprise an Equipment Grounding Conductor. But it is not, and should not be used as, a Grounding Electrode Conductor.

Can you clarify your question?

They are using a conduit run as ground. The drum should be grounded to earth with grounding rod not any part if the electrical system.

maybe bob will correct me if I am wrong, but the purpose of the strap is to minimize the chances of static electricity buildup creating a spark that might cause ignition.

most of the time it seems these things are bonded to building steel rather than a ground rod.

generally you would want the strap connected to something pretty close.

I have done this years ago,but only once.It was at a Chemical Facility,in a chemical storgage area. This inclosed building was outside of the main facility structure separated by breezeway, where the 55 gallon chemical-filled drums were stored in this separate building. This whole area inside this separate building, was of the classified location.

We ran copper busbar along the interior block-walls just above the drum height and tapped the busbar with I believe, I remeber it being #8awg, and crimped alligator clips to the ends of the #8.This was for the attaching to the top-edge of the drums while present, and stored in this building.

This installation, was back in mid-90's era.I have seen it,and I have done it.There is a standard, that does exist.

It's just been so long ago..But I'm also thinking it was isolated..

But I just can't remeber, for sure.

This is covered by another chapter of NFPA. There is some overlap to NEC of course. SO now you get the joy of reading two NFPA books.

Whole idea is to prevent static when dispensing liquids. Requires bonding from "source" drum to "filled" container.

Generally (especially in large rooms) done with a bus that is grounded with conductors and gator clips to the drums.
