What is the proper method for grounding natural or propane gas piping within a building? Also, can it be grounded to a sub-panel or does it have to be directly grounded to the building grounding electrode?

I think you mean " Bonded " versus the term Grounding.......Here....this image may help you.....

It shall be bonded to the service equipment enclosure, the grounded ( neutral ) service conductor, or the grounding electrode or grounding electrode conductor where the grounding electrode conductor is of sufficient size. Size it based on 250.122.

If you read the box under the graphic you'll see that the EGC within the gas appliance is permitted to bond the gas piping. Separate bonding jumpers are not required.

ddetter, do a "search" in the above menu for "gastight bonding". There's a long story to be told about gas pipe.

Hot water bonding...

Hot water bonding...

I noticed the hot water side is not bonded. Local code here (N. Cali) mandates that we do so. Funny thing is, the AHJ's in certain areas require the bonding of the metallic plumbing at the water heater even if the pipes transistion to pex where not exposed. Does anyone see why this is not a redundant requirement? :-?
