Grounding grid system (structural)

Where can I find code for developing an electrical grounding system for structural steel, electrical buildings (including a substation), etc.? I need to prove to our civil PE that an existing design is up to code. Is this outside of the scope of the NEC? If so, any idea where I can find these regulations?

I am not sure an actual grid is even required.

A grounding electrode of some sort is requried, but a grid is not.

Can someone point me in the direction of an article (NEC or not) that shows this? I cannot find much at all.

There are no articles that anyone can point to that tell you something that is not required. The code only includes things that are required.

But you said that there's a requirement for an electrode. I was hoping to at least find this.

Also, just makes me curious why all of our installations include a grounding grid if they are never required? Just good practice?
