Our jurisdiction as well as many others in our area require 20' of bare copper in the footing of light poles and sign bases. Our new CBO feels this is incorrect and should not be called. Call it a lightening rod or a raceway it should be grounded.

Re: grounding of light poles and sign bases

I agree with the CBO. An equipment grounding (bonding) conductor is the effective fault path. The "grounding" of the light or sign poles serves no purpose and will not provide any additional safety.

Bryan

With so much confusion (in class last night I had students with up to 30 years in the field who still do not understand this concept) in our industry about grounding and bonding, I would like to amend your post a little if you do not mind.

"The "grounding" of the light or sign poles serves no purpose and will not provide any additional safety. "

The "grounding" (to earth) ....

Some still think that grounding is bonding, and may think your post includes the equipment ground conductor.
