A friend asked me to check the ground on his phone line, ETC. this weekend, fed me some great BBQ for payment. He has lost the modem on his DTV receiver 2 times in the last year. He has had both the POCO and Bellsouth check things and they said everything is fine. It's a double-wide so everything is on a pole. Everything seems to be up to snuff. He said that he saw a flash at the phone plug right before the thunder. Would a separate ground rod for the phone help? Any suggestions?

A separate ground rod would probably make things worse, and would be a code violation as well.

There's nice coverage in section 250.94. Single point grounding is all you can accomplish here.

PC cards now use opto isolation to help avoid damage from ESD events. I don't know of anything which will help with lightning strikes.

What about those radio shack wireless transmitters? You transmit within the house. They also allow you to put the unit wherever it's convenient. I can't imagine anything else with such a substantial amount of isolation. Perhaps there's something else I'm not familiar with. :-?
