ok you have a 400 amp service with a double meter can.Two main disconnects, one for each unit.I create my ground at the first means of disconnect. But getting my ground from my main to my panel inside the house.Do i just run it along side of my se cable or get it from my cold water ground,or either or?

Re: grounding question

I'm not sure I follow you. Are you asking about the grounding electrode conductor? The one that goes from the pipe or rod to the service? If so, why would you take it to the panel inside?

If you are talking about the equipment grounding conductor, it is probably inside of your cable already. If it is not...NO DO NOT GET IT FROM THE WATER PIPE!!!

The equipment grounding conductor is in the business of clearing faults...the earth is not.

Re: grounding question

hodge,
You need to run SER cable from the meter/mains to the panels. SEU is used up to the first means of disconnect. SER contains two (or three for three phase) hots, a neutral and an equipment grounding conductor. The grounding conductor would be connected to a grounding bus in the panel, which would also bond the enclosure. The neutral bus would have the neutrals connected to it and be insulated from the enclosure and the grounding conductor.

PS, Ryan is right about the water pipe or ground rod conductors. They are the grounding electrode system grounds, and all grounding electrode bonding is to be done at the service location.
