Do I need to install a ground rod on the secondary side of a small separately derived system (transformer)? I have a 50VA 240/120 volt stepdown transformer feeding a GFCI duplex receptacle. The receptacle provides power to a cord connected auto drain control on an air compressor receiving tank. The receptacle and transformer are inside a garden shed that encloses the air compressor. There is no cold water pipe or structural steel framing available nearby for grounding the transformer. NEC Article 250-20(b)requires the secondary side of the transformer to be grounded. Can I simply ground the secondary side to the primary side equipment grounding conductor or enclosure ground? And/or does NEC Article 250-30 require me to install a ground rod?
