Grounding Seperate Buildings

How long has there been a requirement to install ground rods or a grounding connection at a separate building? In my oldest code book, 1956, section 2524 states in so many words, that the grounding connection from the identified conductor is required
Note: I can see why there is confusion on grounding, early NECs were not clear on this topic at all. Article 250 over the last ten years is definitely easier to understand (and longer!)

Good question. I also wonder if there was statistics/science to back up that requirement.
