I would like to know if "power-operable switch" could mean shunt-trip device as in Article 230.76 and then Article 230.82(7). It would be a lot easier to mount 3 or 4 Knox Boxes next to each other, than bringing all service conductors up and then down again.

I say no. A power-operated switch is not the same thing a shunt-trip. I see nothing in the two sections you mention that permits shunt tripping equipment.

I'm not even sure what they are talking about with a "power-operated switch", my boss said there were switches that had a motor to open breakers, etc., but to me I can see little difference between a switch running a small motor or a switch running a coil, to do the same job?!

OK, Article 225.38(A) defines power-operable switch as long as it can be opened by hand in the event of a power failure. So, a shunt trip main with a snap switch in a Knox box! What do you think? I would love to see people comments.

One more note, it seems that the Code's intent is met here. If the power were to come back up, with the snap switch in the "on" position, the shunt device would immediately trip the main breaker.
