Seprate service??

A discussion started between some co-workers the argument is:
Is taping a meter (residential) on the load side feeding a fused disconnect, or going underground to a garage mcb panelboard, considered a violation because the main disconnects are not grouped together, to me if the conductors are serving a seprate structure it is not a violation if it serves equipment in relation to the home (ex. air cond. Installed adjacent to the meter) would it be??

I believe Mike Whitt brought this up awile back and there was quite a lengthy discussion on it. I will try and find the post.

A/C Service??

A/C Service??

Here is what it leads to in a existing residential home, they sometimes provide an a/c service as an ?interruptible service? this way a service upgrade to the panel can sometimes be avoided and it supposedly gives you a discounted rate on you?re a/c. however when this is done (the way I have seen it) they tap the load side of the meter feed another meter (line side) and all the associated controls, then the load side to a fused disc. Sw. located on the outside of the house to the a/c. so how does all this fit in? you now have a fused disc. Sw. for the a/c and another inside an mcb in your panelboard?? Is this then legal??

Mike if the service is tapped and both meters are on the same building then I would think you would have to group the disco.

Hmm.

Hmm.

That was the opinion of the majority but when they do these services on existing residential homes they just provide a disc. Sw. on the outside, leaving the panelboad disc. Sw. as the mcb inside, it sounds like they should provide a disc. A wireway and tap those conductors.

Yes, the least they should do is have a disco outside for the panel inside but then that would make the interior panel a sub panel and you would need to separate grounds and neutrals and perhaps change out the cable.

The fact is it is not legal as you state it.
