hey guys, my goal is to get my masters license and open a small shop, myself and a few guys. it seems everyone i ask gives me a different answer.
I live in missouri.
i finish my 4th year of my apprentice program in june but won't have my 8,000 hours until November (tested through 1st year of school) i will then be issued a journeyman card by the department of labor.
it's 8,000 hours correct?
what are the next steps/hours needed to get a masters license and open a shop like i said.

from my understanding, i need to have an up to date code class, and 12,000 hours of experience? is this correct

also, i would like to enroll in a code class as soon as i get out of school (june 09) take the missouri state journeyman exam also, and take the masters test right after that. is it possible for me to take the journeyman and masters tests even if i don't have enough hours logged? and if i do pass, i just won't get my license until i get the hours?
thanks

Small steps first, had to have 4 years of JW experience after topping out to test in Washington state. Click here and it should cover a lot of bases for you.

Missouri has no state test, all tests are through local municipalities. It varies from city to city but most require a minimum of two years as a journeyman.

I would start here or just call 1 888 NEC CODE. and talk to the people at Mike Holt's. I did the VHS tapes (I must be getting old?) for the Master's course. Passed the Washington state Administartors license back in 93 because of the material that was covered. Bang for your buck, MHE goes a long ways!:)

I am not 100% but it might be worth to investigate that you might not need a Masters license. WV has a state master license which I have but it only states you need a license for electrical contracting, which a JW license would do (I never investigated this but I heard it). Some states have an exception that you don't need a license if the company that you are doing work for has full time electricians. Such as industrial plants, or if you sub work for another EC.

Best of luck.

The State of Alaska and the State of Michigan requires that every Electrical Contracting Company has to work under an Electrical Administrators Lic. There doesn't seem to be a problem finding Electrical Administrator who will hire out his lic. Check in your state and see what they require
