Hello Everyone,

I am studying MS in Electric Power and Energy Systems. I am new to the industry (internship). I was wondering is their a good reference or anyone can help me on with this question. I am working on coordination study project (learning). With software (like ETAP etc) it becomes easy to determine the settings and for other functions mostly have guideline from the utility. Just curious is there a way to determine or guidleine to determmine the preliminary relay settings without the use of coordination software for it. I am trying to understand the logic or maths/reasons involved behind the settings recommendation.

For example 50/51 element, we need to make sure the 51 element is set to allow the required Amps to serve the load or if on the secondary side of the transformer it should allow the sec. FLA, make sure the cable is protected, 50 element account for all the inrush could be generated during startup if transformers or motors present.
How would all of you experts would do if you were just asked to provide a reason/ logic why you have recommended this settings for the following functions:

1)50/51
2)50N/51N
3)81U
4)81O
5)59
6)27
7)32
8)25
