When penetrating non fire rated gypsum walls for low voltage i.e. Category 6 cables, is a sleeve code required? If not, what just cut a hole and pass the cable through?

Re: Gypsum wall penetrations

Hey I just answered this question on the BICSI web site.

Any penatration needs to be fire stopped. Walls may not be "fire rated" but may be smoke rated or used to separate areas for ventalation zones. Treat all gypsum walls the same, as fire rated and sleeve them. Think of the cost to go back and install just one sleeve. Hundereds compaired to a piece of scrap conduit.

I use the habit of collecting scrap conduit just for this use when I'm on a construction site. Saves a load of time and money.

Depending on the UL assembly, even firewalls do not need to be sleeved. For example UL-W-L-3001
is one of many wall systems that that provide 1& 2 hour ratings with just cable penetrating the wall with fire caulking.
