I have a question although it may not be related to NEC, I would like to find out where I can find out the answer if you guys know.
This is about fire protection.
I am working on O'Hare Airport Elevator Modernization project, where there is an existing Halogenated fire extinguisher suspended from the ceiling in the elevator machine room. The Department of Aviation is asking the following:
"Can you check whether Cease Fire halon (ozon-depleting)-based fire suppression systems in these type rooms (elevator machine rooms) are recommended, accepted or even allowed by NFPA without an accompanying audio/visual alarm?"
This existing extinguisher has a module space that needs to be installed and tied to the fire alarm control panel. Do we need this module to tie to fire alarm sysem?

Re: Haloginated fire extinguisher

NFPA12A is the standard that you should referance for this information. Without seeing the "system" that you have my first response would be yes you need this module.

Re: Haloginated fire extinguisher

Depending on where the particular devices are located, I would say that they were added 2 to 3 years ago. I can only speak of the main parking garage since that's where I work; for the last 10 years.

With respect to requirements, I cannot say if a Chicago or airport code is superseding any NFPA regulation directly. I know that when the lower pedestrian corridors were fabricated in the 80's (??), and I believe that at that time, fire panels were installed in just those "populated" areas. The garage itself is pre-ordinance or otherwise not included. You might want to talk to Jim DeRoo if he is still here; the Department of Aviation's electrical engineer.

Seeing the weekly meetings on the project taking place next door, it would seem like most of the same managers and contractors are here from the first phase. You might start with one of them. I am going to speak with our people to see if the DOA electricians didn't have some hand in that project myself; however with all of the early retirement that's taking place lately, I might be harder that I think.

Re: Haloginated fire extinguisher

As a follow up, it is our understanding that these devices were installed by D.O.A. electricians or city EW&C electricians. If that is indeed the case, they would have been directed to do so by a D.O.A. supervisor. You might want to check with the D.O.A. electrical superintendent at the Allied Trades Building.

Re: Haloginated fire extinguisher

Just a suggestion - if you go to the AFAA website and register with them you can log onto their "code forum" and ask your question there. Many of the participants are extremely knowledgeable and can point you in the right direction.
