I never really used hand holes before and thought came across my mind.

Is THWN permitted in hand holes? I know it's listed for wet locations, but it may be in contact with earth (dirt, mud, etc) considering hand holes have an open bottom. What type of connectors would you recommend? I'm thinking Polaris submersible connectors. I'm not sure if split bolts can be used if taped well with scotch kote sealant applied to it. Just wondering what you guys use.

Thanks!

THWN is allowed, regular wire nuts, polaris non submersible, split bolts are all okay. The hand hold is supposed to be in the dirt at or around grade, not underwater.
Take a look at 314.30(C).
(C) Enclosed Wiring. All enclosed conductors and any splices or terminations, if present, shall be listed as suitable for wet locations.
