"Handcuffing" as a support

I'm having a bit of a problem in regards to whether or not it is a NEC violation to handcuff two pieces of conduit together. Can anyone shed some light on this? I have one individual that says that is an expectable means of supporting a conduit run and another that says it is not.
Any clarification would be appreciated.
