I need to place boxes on the outside of a block wall. They will then be stoned around. Would handy & octagon boxes be allowed outside?
Is the metal on these boxes different from masonry boxes?

I have seen these used in new buildings and exterior work, specially in stucco or that painted over foam board, for hanging exterior lights... To that end some of those fixtures can be five foot off the building and weigh quite a bit, I have seen many of those boxes pulled out of the wall (Popeyes Chicken, with those long RMC looking gooseneck fixtures)... May want to put tapcons through any octagon box to keep it from coming out of the wall.

Since I don't know the thickness of the stone, I may have to leave the boxes floating and let the masons set the box so that there is a flat surface to mount lights and receptacles

I don't see a problem with your install. For stone I would use a flat base around the box.

We always cover this type of box with duck tape to help keep out moisture. I guess you would have to go back after a few years to see if it really works.

I would cut a 4.5" square hole in the block and mount a 4x4 box flush with the block. A mud ring of the appropriate depth would be added to be stoned around. This assumes the wiring is inside the block or coming through from the other side of the block wall. A Caddy screw gun bracket cut down to the size of the box works well to mount it. Four Tapcons make it really secure.
